If you’ve got your sights set on greatness (or your next game in the park), you’ll need a pair of boots destined to dominate the rugby pitch. Not sure where to start? Here’s our breakdown – what makes a great boot great, how to pick the perfect pair, and everything else you’ll need to know.
As a rugby player, your boots are the fundamental bridge between you and success. Whether you’re sprinting down the flank or anchoring the scrum, your boots are at the base of everything you do – literally. With so much to consider, finding the ideal pair can feel like a wild goose chase for new and seasoned players alike.
Don’t panic – you’re in the right place.
In this guide, we’re going to break down all the major points to consider if you’re after buying the right pair at the first time of trying. Say goodbye to bruised toes and hello to winning ways with this breakdown.
WHY RUGBY BOOTS?
We all know the temptation of recycling your football boots for the rugby pitch and – let’s face it – they’re alright. A pair of boots designed for football are acceptable for a game of rugby… but if you’re doing anything more than standing still (which we sincerely hope you are), you’ll feel the difference in a boot designed for the sport.
It's a sensible choice for avoiding injury. Rugby involves a lot of physical contact, which takes its toll on your feet and ankles. Whereas football boots are made for changes of direction and bursts of speed, rugby boots are built to keep you powerful and stable, with higher heels and more studs. Rugby boots also boast a wider fit than most football boots do, which provide better propulsion with each step.
If you want to play rugby – and want to keep playing rugby – a pair of boots designed for the sport are a need, not a want.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BOOTS FOR YOUR GAME
One of the basics that you should know before you commit to a pair is to know where you’re playing. Specifically, you should know what the surface will be like on your pitch, as boots are tailor made for different ones. You’ll also want to know what position you’re going to be in, with different boots to suit forwards or backs.
SOFT-GROUND BOOTS
If the pitch you play on is wet and muddy, you will want a pair of soft ground rugby boots. Crafted to provide better stability, they feature longer studs for a deeper root into the ground, keeping you sturdier with every kick, sprint or tackle.
FIRM-GROUND BOOTS
Used to a dryer pitch? Then firm ground boots will be more what you’re after. With shorter, moulded studs, they keep you moving when the ground is harder, boosting your performance.
FORWARDS
Forwards need to be strong, both in their play and on the ground. Boots designed for the font and second row offer longer moulded studs and added stiffness, ensuring that whatever pitch your on, your boots keep you solid throughout every scrum, lineout and tackle.
BACKS
If you’re one of the backs, you’ll be looking to maximise on speed and agility. A lightweight design, short studs and soft uppers keep you moving like the wind as you tear up and down the pitch, whilst a bigger striking area offers a cleaner connection in every kick.
WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?
Most rugby boots are crafted from one of two materials – leather or synthetics.
Typically, leather boots are crafted from kangaroo leather, which offers a premium level of strength and toughness. Leather tends to mould to the shape of your feet, so offers superb support for your game.
Synthetic boots are becoming more popular with players across the world, and for good reason too. Whilst not offering the same fitted feel, they’re lighter in weight to keep you fast and often offer better water resistance.
HOW SHOULD THEY FIT?
Once you know what you need the boot for, you need to establish what you need from the boot.
You want your rugby boots to have a snug fit so that your feet aren’t banging around, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable when you’re wearing them. As a good rule of thumb, we recommend about ½ an inch between your toes and the end of the boot. By doing this, it gives enough room for you to move well without making them so loose as to cause any pain after the game.
Women, unfortunately, will know the frustration of ill-fitting boots better than most. For years, female players have had to pad out boots too wide or boots too long, with the thought of injury lingering until the final whistle. Thankfully, it’s all starting to change, with boots finally being crafted for the female foot. Explore our full collection of women’s rugby boots now.
